Course Aims & Objectives

The curriculum is divided into two parts:

  • Visual Arts (S1 to S3) and
  • Visual Arts for the Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) (S4 to S6).

 

The Aims of the Visual Arts curriculum are to enable students to:

  • enrich their aesthetics and arts experience;
  • strengthen their abilities to appreciate and create various forms of visual arts work aesthetically and critically;
  • develop perceptual abilities, generic skills, multiple perspectives and metacognition through autonomous and open-ended processes of enquiry in art learning;
  • enhance cultural and cross-cultural understanding through exploration of the art of diverse cultures;
  • cultivate personal refinement, positive values and attitudes, self-identity and a sense of commitment towards the community, the nation and the world; and
  • acquire a foundation for pursuing education and career opportunities in the art and creative industries.

 

This course is designed in accordance with theVisual Arts Curriculum and Assessment Guide (Secondary 4-6) (with updates in November 2015) with the following four main learning objectives:

  • Developing Creativity and Imagination
    Students should be able to generate ideas through imagination and creativity by participating in arts appraising, creating and performing activities.
  • Developing Skills and Processes
    Students should be able to use different materials, elements, arts language and resources to experience and express the arts. Exploration and experimentation in the creative process should also be treasured in arts education.
  • Cultivating Critical Responses
    Students should be able to appraise and respond to the arts and arts-related issues from multiple perspectives.
  • Understanding Arts in Context
    Students should be able to understand the arts in context and their relationship with human life and society.
