idea:
Our school's principal, Mr. Sun Fangzhong BBS MBE, JP, actively promoted Mandarin instruction at Soochow Primary School over 50 years ago. He firmly believed that using Mandarin as the medium of instruction offered two major advantages. First, Mandarin is the language of our nation, and promoting it effectively fosters students' sense of belonging and national identity. Second, written language, like writing, significantly enhances students' language proficiency and expressive abilities. Therefore, adhering to the consistent educational principles of the sponsoring body, our school became the first subsidized secondary school in Hong Kong to use Mandarin as the medium of instruction .
Because language proficiency is key to learning, our school has always prioritized language development and the improvement of students' language proficiency. In addition to providing Mandarin as the medium of instruction, we also strive to provide students with an excellent environment for learning English, catering for their long-term academic and career development needs. Therefore, since our founding, our school has designated English and Mandarin as the "official languages" of the school , with teachers and students using English or Mandarin in all formal settings.
arrange:
Overall, our school adopts a diversified approach to arranging the medium of instruction for students . We teach a number of non-language subjects in English based on the characteristics of the curriculum and the development needs of students in different classes.
In high school, to broaden students' horizons and align with international learning, students must engage in extensive reading of international science, information technology, and business materials. Therefore, we use English textbooks and English as the medium of instruction for science subjects such as physics , chemistry , and biology , as well as for information and communications technology . Furthermore, the humanities are characterized by their focus on developing students' higher-level thinking and analytical skills. Numerous academic research studies have shown that learning in a familiar language effectively enhances students' understanding of course content, strengthens their confidence in learning, and helps develop higher-order thinking skills. Therefore, we use Chinese textbooks for humanities subjects, with classes taught in Mandarin. Students can choose subjects tailored to their abilities and interests to optimally prepare for future studies.
In junior secondary schools, to ensure alignment with the senior secondary curriculum and medium of instruction , both Integrated Science and General Computer courses will use English textbooks and be taught in English . Other non-language subjects (such as history , geography , and mathematics ) will also utilize a variety of methods to promote the learning of English elements . These include implementing "English Extension Activities," cross-disciplinary English enrichment courses with English subjects, teaching individual units in English, and reviewing concepts and content taught in Chinese in individual lessons. Based on past successful experience , we are confident that these arrangements will effectively lay a solid foundation for students to progress to the New Senior Secondary curriculum.
In addition to formal classroom instruction, the school implements a series of measures to help students improve their English proficiency . This comprehensive approach provides students with an excellent environment for learning English, fulfilling our mission to cultivate students with proficiency in both Chinese and English. The school also revises these measures annually based on actual circumstances.
